Inspection, Measurement, Scanning & Reverse Engineering

Laser Scanning, is a non-contact measurement and inspection approach, based upon the process of projecting a structured laser line over the surface of an object in order to collect 3 dimensional data. The surface data is captured by a camera sensor mounted in the laser scanner which records accurate dense 3D points in space.

Types of laser scanners available and used by AMAP include:

  • Portable CMM Arm-Based Scanning
  • 3D Laser Scanning Camera
  • Long-Range Laser Scanner
  • Conventional CMM-Based Scanning

Digitizing, which is a more traditional contact based approach, is the process of taking point-by-point measurements of X, Y, and Z coordinates until enough data is captured to build geometric surfaces. 
There are 3 types of digitizing tools available to AMAP:

  • Portable CMM Arm-Based probing
  • Portable Laser Tracker technology
  • Conventional CMM

Reverse Engineering is the process of measuring a part or object and then creating a CAD model of the part/object that reflects how it was to be designed originally. Through the digital modelling process, a computer model of an object based upon the data captured (typically using a 3D laser scanner), is created that is within measurement accuracy of the system and replicates the form of the object.

After a part or object has been scanned and modelled it forms a digital "backup" of a part. This digital model can then protect from accidental part loss, provide a working "virtual" blueprint in order to rebuild or remanufacture, or provide the ability to start from a base model and create something new without having to start from scratch. The model can also be used for re-engineering/design purposes whereby using the digital model it is possible to make engineering and design changes of the part or object in a variety of ways, to either add or subtract design features to the existing part or object, use as a base model to design a new part or object, or use as an object to design other components around.

Using our advanced laser scanning and reverse engineering tools and processes, AMAP can inspect and analyse a part or object in a variety of ways:

  • Compare a scanned part/object to a "nominal" CAD model
  • Compare a scanned part/object to a 2D drawing
  • Compare a scanned part/object to another scanned part/object
  • Produce associated reports and visual representations to guide decision making

In addition AMAP can offer training in a range of quality and inspection techniques based upon the above approaches, as well as application of quality control processes such as statistical process control, SPC, which can also be applied with scanned and measured inspection data in an automated inspection approach.

After laser scanning or reverse engineering, or if provided with a model, we have various options for replicating that object, such as rapid prototyping by 3D printing.
